Summer soccer competitions in Warriewood are under pressure, with organisers warning that up to a third of players may be turned away this season following a decision to restrict small-sided games to synthetic turf fields.

FootballSSG, the group behind one of the region’s largest summer soccer programs, has been told to relocate its long-running Warriewood competition from Pittwater Park (Rat Park) to Narrabeen Sports High’s synthetic fields. The change, due to take effect for the 2025 spring season, has sparked concerns about limited field space and inadequate facilities.
The Northern Beaches Council says the move is aimed at protecting natural turf surfaces from damage caused by high-intensity sports like small-sided soccer. However, organisers argued that the new location will significantly reduce their capacity, potentially leaving around 1,000 children without a chance to play.
The situation has triggered broader fears among local sporting groups, with FootballSSG suggesting other grass-based sports could soon face similar restrictions. The council denies any wider plan, stating that only small-sided soccer is currently affected due to the impact it has on grass fields.
FootballSSG has seen steady growth since its launch in 2008, now hosting more than 3,600 players across venues in Warriewood and Curl Curl. Around 90 per cent of participants are children and teens aged six to 17.
The issue comes as part of broader changes to local sporting facilities, with resurfacing and infrastructure upgrades scheduled at North Narrabeen Reserve. Despite claims from organisers, the council maintains it is investing in maintaining and improving both natural and synthetic turf fields across the Northern Beaches.
