Two elderly women who were trying unsuccessfully to use a cheque to pay for their Christmas groceries were in for a pleasant surprise when the Warriewood supermarket’s store manager stepped in and took care of their $200 bill.
Two women were shopping last Tuesday, 20 December 2022 at Woolworths Warriewood. They tried paying for their groceries using a cheque, but sadly, the store doesn’t accept checks.
It was a distressing moment indeed for the elderly women who would have had to put everything back on the shelves unless they could provide another form of payment.
That was when the store manager decided to step in and picked up their $200 bill and said “Merry Christmas” to the two women.
The heartwarming random act of kindness was shared via a Twitter post by broadcaster and author Wendy Harmer.
“So nice to see,” Ms Harmer wrote on her social media, adding that “ they had offered to go to the bank to get cash… but the bank wasn’t clos (they never are these days). So it was a kind gesture.”

One user commented that she too had a similar experience with the store.
“Woolies is amazing. I had gift cards one year to buy Xmas food and they weren’t working. Trolley loaded to the max. Woolies Mgr walked me to the car and waived the bill. 😭 I was sobbing. ♥️👏💯,” she wrote.
“A 95-year-old friend told me yesterday of a similar story from last week. She bought $80 worth of goods at the local IGA but couldn’t find her credit card which she’d just used at the PO. They insisted she keep everything and wouldn’t accept cash next day. Some good in the world,” another replied.
A Woolworths spokesperson confirmed that the supermarket giant is running a nationwide “season of good acts” campaign with at least 1,000 surprise moments awaiting the lucky customers including paying for a customer’s trolley of groceries, providing a family with Christmas ham, and gifting a hamper of goodies.
